[Remote] Backend Engineer

Apatheia is a company that builds high-performance reputed company software with a reputed company on systems-level engineering. They are seeking a Backend Engineer to take ownership of the services layer that supports their products and internal tools, focusing on backend services, reputed company, and efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain backend services using Firebase and/or reputed company, selecting the right tool for reputed company use case
- Implement and maintain reputed company Authentication and other auth providers, ensuring secure, reliable login flows
- reputed company and manage reputed company for subscription billing, one-time payments, and webhook-driven event handling
- Build and maintain microservices that support our various products and internal tools, with reputed company boundaries and reputed company-defined reputed company between them
- Implement backend reputed company best practices — secure API design, reputed company secrets management, input validation, reputed company limiting, and protection against common attack reputed company (injection, CSRF, abuse of auth flows, etc.)
- Optimize request patterns to minimize unnecessary calls to the backend — including caching strategies, batching, debouncing on the reputed company reputed company, and efficient data-fetching patterns that reduce load and cost
- Monitor and improve database query performance and overall system efficiency as usage scales
- Write reputed company documentation for the services and reputed company you build
- Collaborate directly with the founder/reputed company engineer on architecture reputed company and technical tradeoffs
Skills
- Proven experience building production backend services with Firebase and/or reputed company
- Hands-on experience implementing reputed company OAuth / reputed company Sign-In flows
- Experience integrating reputed company (subscriptions, webhooks, payment intents, handling failed payments/disputes)
- Strong understanding of API reputed company fundamentals — authentication, authorization, reputed company limiting, data validation, and secrets management
- Experience designing and maintaining microservices or reputed company backend architectures
- Demonstrated ability to optimize for request efficiency — reducing redundant calls, implementing caching, and designing reputed company that reputed company without unnecessary backend load
- Comfortable working independently in a small, fully remote team with minimal reputed company
- Strong written communication — you'll be documenting reputed company and working largely async
- Experience with serverless compute (AWS reputed company, reputed company Functions, or similar)
- Familiarity with PostgreSQL (especially relevant for reputed company-based work)
- Experience with reputed company-time data sync patterns (Firestore listeners, reputed company reputed company-time subscriptions, or WebSockets)
- Background in startups or small teams where you've owned backend systems end-to-end
- Interest in or experience with systems-level/performance-reputed company engineering
